Kyiv

The famous meme of a Ukrainian farmer towing a Russian tank away is immortalised in this central reservation tribute.

It’s at KPI, about a mile from the central station on the main route west out of town.

Elsewhere, the famous Snake Island image has been added to the river wall on the side of the Dniepr, when Ukrainian soldiers told Russians to fuck off.

Wikipedia says of the Black Sea clash; ‘On 30 March 2022, it was reported that the soldier who made the remark toward the ship was released in a prisoner exchange, and subsequently awarded a medal.’

Next to the Snake Island tribute, this commemorates someone who died earlier this year.

These next two look like evocations of the Maidan 2014 spirit when demonstrators fronted the Berkut riot police (second pic) in clashes that left dozens dead but eventually led to the overthrow of Putin poodle president Yanukovych.

This marks 30 years of independence, since 1991.

Below, the central Maidan square at the heart of Kyiv.

The square was at the centre of an encampment set up ahead of the successful removal of Yanukovych.

Above, a statue of ukrainian communist Mykola Shchors, who died, aged 24, in 1919.

This is near Universityet – the slogans demand answers as to why the Red Army leader hasn’t been hauled down.

Badges are everywhere. Sticky backs mean they can be attached to uniforms without having to be sewn on.

The central station – Vokzal – is a poignant spot.

It was difficult to watch one couple’s lingering parting embrace, the male in fatigues clearly off somewhere nasty.

Above, near Vokzal, armed forces kit is on sale.

So, Kyiv then, sombre, sober, prepared, wholly engaged on the matter in hand. Your heart bleeds. A tough winter seems assured.

Last word perhaps, lies with Zelenskiy, whose words at the moment of his country’s deepest crisis will echo forever – and have been added to the station’s exterior:
